RC44 Austria Cup team AEZ bronze medal with OneSails

2012-06-04

The final day of racing at RC44 Austria Cup could not have been better for the local heroes on AEZ RC44 Sailing Team winning today’s single and final race in light conditions on Lake Traunsee.
Keen to please the home crowd, René Mangold’s AEZ RC44 Team was first out on to the water as spectator craft swarmed around the Austrian. They pulled into the lead up the first beat and despite many opportunities to lose it, clung on to take their second win of the event much to the delight of local fans and finished third overall.
The AEZ Team with Rene Mangold (AUT) on the helm, Markus Wieser (GER) Tactics , Christian Binder (AUT) Strategist, Yann Gouinot (FRA) Mainsail Trimmer, Eberhard Magg (GER) Pit, Gerd Habermüller (AUT) Grinder, Nuno Barreto (POR) Trimmer, Gilberto Condo (POR) Bow/Boatcaptain, Nano Negrin (AUT) Coach, Andreas Drack (AUT) Shore Crew, took third place overall only one point behind Team Ceeref, and achieved their best result since joining the tour in 2008.
Tactician Markus Wieser was satisfied: “we did not catch everything perfect, but except of Artemis who sailed an exellent race, no one did.
The new set of OneSails from Christian Binder and the perfect set up helped us to an additional plus. Each member of the team has contributed to this success, the team did a great job. Now it is time to put our focus on the next event and continue to work on the details. We are hungrier than ever and look forward to the next match in Sweden.
“It’s a really good feeling – we’re so satisfied,” Mangold said. “Our project started with the first event here 2007. It’s great to have this event with all those top teams and the worlds best sailors here, but it is more important for us to have a home team and with this success. We are on the podium! It’s really good.”
Christian Binder: “What a great success in front of the home crowd. Our goal was to finish top six but to be on the podium exceeds our expectations by far. Of course this is also an outcome of the intensive sail development and the successful teamwork within the One Sails group. For me as the Sailmaker it was also a good feeling to get so many congratulations on the sails from other teams. Especially getting honest compliments on the sails from some of the best trimmers like Don Cowie and Yann Gouinot was a very important feedback for me.
Next up for the RC44s, over 18-22 July, is the event in Marstrand, Sweden on Torbjorn Tornqvist’s home waters.
